I recently heard that one of the largest Critical Mass events just took place in Budapest on Sept. 22. Criticalmass.hu.
Budapest, Hungary has experienced its greatest Critical Mass bike ride ever on September 22, 2005. Estimates range between 24,000 and 30,000. This would therefore also make it one of the greatest Critical Mass rides in history.

This would therefore also make it one of the greatest Critical Mass rides in history. The last year has seen a mushrooming participation in Critical Mass rides in the Hungarian capitol. The initial breakthrough came on World Carfree Day in 2004, when 4,000 riders participated. This was followed by an Earth Day Critical Mass ride on April 22 of this year with a staggering 10,000 people. The trend is still in progress. Bicycle messenger groups are in a large way to credit for organizing and publisizing this event. Otherwise organizations like the Hungarian Young Greens (Zöfi) and Clean Air Action Group have also helped in the organization. This is especially good news for the city of Budapest, as it otherwise does not have a very good bike lane network, nor is motorized traffic usually very respective of cyclists. So far the city government has not showed very much interest in bike riders, but this is now changing, as the talk of the town has turned to bikes and Critical Mass.

I started the day at a memorial service at the Sept 11 Fund's memorial site, and ended the day at the Jamaica Plain World's Fair, where there were all kinds of puppets, incredible music and a puppet show all about the politics right now.

Carmen, An Opera
Three of my coworkers and I, my sister and two friends from the Hungarian dance class all went to go see Carmen at he ART. It was really beautful, and instead of a huge orchestra there were two grand pianos, so you really heard all the subtlety in the music and in people's voices. My Mom told me that Carmen was the first opera she had ever seen, back in 1955 in Hungary and said she still remembers some of the scenes. We all liked it, but Carmen being in love with the cocky bullfighter was unconvincing.

Printing
I printed all day in the darkroom and Bryon and I rented a horrible movie at night, Vanity Fair by Mira Nair. Hated it. This director made Monsoon Wedding, which is great so I am not sure what was going on when she made this one.

I shot this in Portland and never put it up, so here it is. It's outside of the Baghdad movie theatre, which is amazing. Bryon and I saw a movie there, and drank beers in the theatre (it's allowed and encouraged there).

Connecticut and Alligators
Made it down to Connecticut this weekend to see Jenna!! She recently moved to Norwalk and I haven't seen her in a while. We did things that Jennas and Martas tend to do together, which is go see Blizzard, the Albino Alligator and some other crazy creatures. Also, we ate a tonn of food, talked way too much about boys and saw March of the Penguins while clutching a huge basket of popcorn. Good times.
